Update: Nelson County Man Faces Felony Child Abuse Charges

Nelson Co., VA-We are learning more about the Gladstone man charged with felony child abuse in Nelson County. 41-year-old Kalen Joseph Nielsen is accused of abusing his own three-month-old son. Nielsen is also charged with malicious wounding in the case.

Nielsen is a registered sex offender in Virginia, for a crime he was charged with in Florida in 2006. Nielsen was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a victim under the age of 16 years old. That's just one of many offenses dating back to 1996 that Nielsen is accused of committing in Florida.

Last week Investigator Billy Mays with the Nelson County Sheriff's Office filed charges against Nielsen for malicious wounding and felony child abuse. Nielsen is accused of violently shaking his three-month-old son.

The child is in stable but critical condition at UVa hospital. At this point doctors are not sure if the child's brain will be affected by the alleged abuse.

Nielsen is being held at the Charlottesville-Albemarle County Jail with no bond. Investigator Mays says the child's mother is not being charged in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

The baby is in critical but stable condition at UVA.

Nielsen, who is a registered sex offender, is being held at the Charlottesville/Albemarle Complex with no bond.
