The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region Awards Autism Education Grants

Danville, VA-- This month is National Autism Awareness month, and two groups in Danville will receive a grant to help further their cause.

Westwood Middle School and Carrington Autism Resource Center at Averett University will receive funding from the Autism Education Fund. The fund was created from the 2nd Annual Dan River 5K.

A special education class at Westwood Middle has been awarded $240. It will allow the students to experience the educational resources that pertain to their learning objectives. They will also be able to visit the new Digital Dome Theater and the Danville Science Center,

Averett will use their $1,300 to increase autism awareness and education within public school classrooms in Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell Counties, and  to better include and instruct children with autism.

The funds will allow Carrington Resource Center to provide a series of free, Saturday workshops and printed pamphlets on a variety of topics for teachers,  coaches, and support aides to better understand and educate students with autism.
The Dan River Autism Awareness 5k is an annual run/walk held in April in Danville. The goals of the event are to raise autism awareness, to build  community support for those affected by autism, and to fundraise for the Autism Education Fund.

The 3rd annual event is Saturday, April 26, 2014 on the Riverwalk Trail at Anglers Park in Danville.
