Community Response Is Overwhelming For Women's Shelter

Lynchburg, VA -The community has really stepped up to help a Lynchburg shelter for domestic violence victims.

In March we told you about the YWCA domestic violence shelter needing sponsors. It was only a few weeks ago that Service Coordinator Kay Roakes said only four of their nine-bedrooms were sponsored and that their shelter is normally filled to capacity.

Friday Roakes says every one of the nine bedrooms are sponsored; and that's not all. She also says the support has been so large that all three bathrooms, the family room, living room, foyer, porch, playroom, and even the patio have been adopted for repair.

The changes can already be seen. Two of the bedrooms that needed help last month have already had some work done. Those sponsoring the rooms have changed the floors and added fresh paint, bedding has been donated, and new lights have been installed.

Roakes says almost every inch of the shelter has been adopted and she looks forward to seeing all the repairs and renovations.

"It is wonderful for us, these rooms take a lot of wear and tear and need this done every few years. We just ask that the public help us do this and they do it of their own free will and we just are really feel so blessed by everybody that came out to do this for us," said Roakes.

Roakes says multiple churches and civic groups have reached out to them. She says one room is even sponsored by a woman who saw our story on Facebook!
