Veterans See Repaired Doughboy Statue

Lynchburg, VA - Many veterans saw the newly repaired Doughboy statue for the first time Friday.

Welders re-attached the bayonet Thursday, which was broken off and taken last fall.

Veterans gather at Monument Terrace every Friday, but this Friday was special because it was the first time in six months they saw the Doughboy Statue whole.

The crew that worked on the monument says they've made sure the bayonet will not break the same way twice.

It has been an enduring process for the veterans after the bayonet was vandalized in October.

"It was like a big part of it was missing. It's like walking around without a weapon," said Veteran Jerry Bowles.

After seeing the nearly complete Doughboy statue Friday, though, the veterans say it was worth the wait.

"It's been a six month journey of having something wrong with it not quite right. Now it's back and everyone is happy about it. I'm happy," Steve Bozeman said.

Bozeman says the best part is that it didn't cost a dime.

Bozeman's long-time friend and fellow veteran Wayne Creasy of AMG took on the project free of charge,

"It means a lot to me. I've been down to the Doughboy when I was a small child," Creasy sad.

It took Creasy and welder Roy Murray more than two and half hours to re-attach the bayonet.

"Getting it lined up exactly was our biggest worry but fortunately everything worked out fine," Creasy said.

Creasy says making the fixtures took the longest, because they had to work off-site. He says they drilled two stainless steel rods through the bayonet which will make sure it won't break at the same part again.

"It won't break right there. More than likely it will keep breaking up," Creasy said.

The veterans hope sculptor Ken Faraoni will redo the patina next week.

Then the bayonet will match the rest of the statue.
