Pigg River Reopens In Time For Summer-Like Weather

Rocky Mount, VA - The Virginia Department of Health has given the all clear to folks who use the Pigg River just west of Rocky Mount.

This comes more than a week after a manure spill into a connecting tributary forced state officials to issue a warning.

The trouble started when 30,000 gallons from a manure pond got into the river.

The spill was just upstream from Waid Park, which fell under the warning to stay clear of the river.

Time and high water has now flushed any danger away as tests show there is no difference in water quality today than before the accident.

Still plenty of folks out there not quite sure what to think.

"And I was worried about my dog who was running around in the water out there and I was wondering if it was safe for him," said Liz Coralla who was in Waid Park Friday afternoon.

Franklin County's Director of Parks and Recreation, Paul Chapman, wants to make sure the message is loud and clear.

"They've lifted the advisory on the river. The Pigg River is back open for business for days like this when it's beautiful to be out and about exploring our waterways," said Chapman.

A portion of Franklin County's tourism revolves around the river - including the Pigg River Ramble - which is still set for the middle of May.
