VT Baseball Holds Off Flames 4-3

Lynchburg - Virginia Tech built a 4-0 lead after the first three innings, then held on to edge number 30 in the country Liberty 4-3 Monday night in Lynchburg.

The visiting Hokies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.  Center fielder Saige Jenco led off the game with an inside-the-park homer.  Second baseman Alex Perez followed with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a sac fly by Matt Zagunis to make it 2-0 Hokies.

Tech got two more runs in the third, Zagunis made it 3-0 as he belted an rbi ground-rule double to left center plating Jenco.  Perez then came home on a squeeze bunt by Phil Sciretta to make it 4-0 Tech.

Liberty cut the Hokies' lead in half in the fifth as Andrew Yacyk smacked a two-run homer to left to bring the Flames within 4-3.  And when Ryan Seiz unloaded a solo blast to straight-away center in the sixth, Liberty had pulled within 4-3.

But the Hokies held off the Flames, reliever Luke Scherzer pitched the final three shutout innings for Tech and did not give up a hit.

The loss was Liberty's first at home since March 15 and snapped the Flames' overall seven-game winning streak.  The Flames drop to 29-and-9 on the season, the Hokies improve to 18-17-and-1.

Weather permitting, Liberty will host JMU Tuesday night, first pitch at 6.  Virginia Tech will play Tennessee at 6 in Salem.
