Wilmington Takes Rubber Game from Hillcats 4-2

Lynchburg - The Hillcats outhit Wilmington 8-5, but the Blue Rocks made the most of their five hits and won the rubber game of the series 4-2 Thursday night at Calvin Falwell Field.

Lynchburg (8-6) stole seven bases in the game, including a career-high four by Kyle Wren, but the Hillcats only converted their aggressive baserunning into runs twice.

In the first inning, Wren hit a one-out single and stole second base. Two batters later, he came home on an RBI single by Kevin Ahrens.

Lynchburg held a 1-0 lead after the first-inning run until Wilmington (7-7) pushed three across in the third inning. Cam Gallagher began the frame with a solid single and advanced to third on a double by Terrance Gore. With the Hillcats still in front, Raul Mondesi ripped a triple to right field to score both Gallagher and Gore and give the Blue Rocks the lead for the rest of the night. Hunter Dozier's sacrifice fly later in the inning gave Wilmington a 3-1 advantage after three frames.

Jarett Miller (0-1) took the loss despite having the longest outing by a Hillcats pitcher so far this season. Miller went 6.2 innings, with the third inning being the only blemish on his scorecard. In fact, Miller only surrendered two baserunners out of the 16 batters he faced outside of the third frame.

Lynchburg's final run came in the eighth inning. Wren hit a leadoff single and promptly stole second and third base to set up a sacrifice fly by Ahrens. Ahrens now leads the team with nine RBIs this season. Meanwhile, Wren surged to the top of the Carolina League leaderboard with his ninth stolen base of the year, passing teammate Jose Peraza, who had two stolen bases Thursday night to give him eight for the year.

Wilmington's other run also came in the eighth inning when Bubba Starling hit a one-out double, stole third base and scored later in the inning on an error.

The Hillcats remain tied for first place in the Northern Division with Potomac, who will visit Lynchburg Friday to begin a four-game series at 6:05pm.
