Investigation on Former American Furniture Warehouse May Take Months

Posted:
Martinsville,VA--  It's been more than a month since the massive blaze in Martinsville that destroyed the former American Furniture Warehouse, and investigators are still trying to figure out what started it all.

The Martinsville Fire Chief said they're still in the early stages of the investigation. They've been investigating since the week the fire occurred.
However, because of the magnitude of the fire, the investigation may take months. There are six and a half acres worth of debris.

On Wednesday, crews knocked down the few brick walls that were left standing. That helped them get better access to the areas they're interested in .Investigators said they've also pulled tons of steel out from one of the buildings.

For the next several weeks they'll be gathering evidence, looking at burn patterns and all possible ignition sources to find out what led to the huge fire.

"Unfortunately, the reality of it, with the extent of the burn, it may still end up being undetermined. But we're going to do our due diligence to look through everything we possibly can to try to determine a cause," said Ted Anderson, Martinsville Fire Chief.

The Fire Chief said the building that is standing will have to be demolished. After that, they will salvage anything that can be recycled and dispose of what they can't. He said that stage of the process will not come for a while.
