From the Hillcats: Salem, VA - Jose Peraza hit a leadoff triple in the first inning and scored immediately on an RBI single by Kyle Wren, but Salem scored four unanswered runs between the third and fifth innings to capture the lead and ultimately take the series opener, 4-2, at LewisGale Field Wednesday night.
Tyler Tewell cranked his first home run of the season in the ninth inning, and a base hit by Levi Hyams allowed Daniel Castro to step to the plate as the tying run. However, Lynchburg’s attempt at a late offensive surge fell short, and the Hillcats (9-10) dropped their fourth consecutive game.
Salem (11-8) used an RBI double and two home runs to score four runs in a three-inning span and take control of the game. After Jarett Miller held the top-scoring offense in the Carolina League to only one baserunner in each of the first two innings, a one-out single by Matty Johnson followed by an RBI double by Ryan Dent tied the game, 1-1, in the third inning.
Carson Blair earned a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, and Aneury Tavarez hit his second home run of the year to put the Red Sox on top, 3-1. A solo homer to left-center field by David Chester rounded out the scoring for Salem.
Miller (0-2) suffered his second straight defeat after allowing four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings. Zach Jadofsky struck out three batters in two scoreless innings as the only pitcher out of the bullpen for the HIllcats. Corey Littrell (1-1) earned the victory with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings, while Dayan Diaz picked up his first save of the year by pitching the ninth frame.
Lynchburg fell below .500 for the first time since April 3 when they lost to the Frederick Keys on Opening Day, 6-2. Andrew Waszak (0-0, 9.53) will look to earn his first victory of the season when he takes the mound against lefty Brian Johnson (2-1, 5.03) in game two of the series at 7:05pm.
