Randolph College Honors Past President with Memorial

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA- Randolph College is gearing up for a big weekend of festivities as they inaugurate their 10th president.

Before installing their newest leader, officials at the school decided to take some time to honor one from the past. Friday the college community dedicated a tree and memorial to the school's longest-serving president, William F. Quillian Jr.

Quillian is credited with transforming Randolph-Macon Women's College into the school it is today, including abolishing sororities and integrating the school. Officials decided to put Quillian's tree in a very special place on campus, right down the sidewalk from a gateway dedicated to his wife.

“No one thinks of Bill without thinking of Margaret, no one thinks of Margaret without thinking of Bill. So I think it’s appropriate for us to have them, the tree and the gate close by each other," said Bradley Bateman, President of Randolph College.

Quillian passed away last month, shortly before his 101st birthday.
