Family Making Getting Around Easier for Son Who was Hit by a Car

Lynchburg, VA - The family of a child hit by a car while riding his bike two years ago is trying help him get around the house better.

It's almost been two years since a tragic accident left 13-year-old Elisha Kahlich with severe brain injuries, but as he's growing, they're finding they need to make more and more modifications to their home. They have already made the first floor Elisha's home base, but the bathroom is the current challenge. Now the family is making plans to renovate it.

Since his accident, Elisha Kahlich has had to relearn everything. Now Elisha is growing, but his house is not growing with him. The family's next project is to see the bathroom renovated.

"It's really a small bathroom, a small space, very typical of a 1920's home," said Robin Foutz who is Elisha’s mom.

This bathroom at the end of the hallway is the only one on the first floor. It can be tricky trying to maneuver through it while caring for Elisha.

"As you can see it's kind of tight quarters so as we actually try to carry him through here, it's kind of a tight door to actually squeeze him into right now," said Nate Foutz.Their plan is to widen the door, create a walk-in shower, and move the wall out for more space. Anything they can do to give their child one less struggle in life.

"I feel like this is going to make things a lot more functional and just a lot more smooth operations for us," said Nate Foutz.

The Foutz's say they know their church, friends, and family will continue to come along with them on this journey.

"As he continues to heal, it's just, I can't believe how much this community, Lynchburg and the surrounding areas has just come along side our family," said Robin Foutz.

Robin and Nate say they'd like to thank Zach Baldridge from True custom who is donating his labor to help tear down and rebuild the bathroom. But they're still in need of supplies. If you’d like to contribute we have that info here.
