ABC 13's Katie Brooke Gives First-Hand Account of Train Derailment

Lynchburg, VA - ABC 13 Reporter Katie Brooke was downtown when the train derailed Wednesday. She describes the ordeal in her own words.

"All of a sudden: bang. [I] ran over to the window and just saw smoke... black plumes of smoke going straight up to the sky. For a minute, everyone just stayed where they were, like 'do we exit the building, do we stay? What do we do?' It was probably a minute or two later that Amazement Square came over the intercom and said everyone evacuate the building from the back exit and get as far away as you can," Brooke said.

Katie and her son evacuated to Main Street where she says an employee at Bank of the James offered to get them out of the area. Just one act of of kindness during a very trying time in downtown Lynchburg Wednesday.
