Navy Fighter Pilot Accused of Online Sex Crimes With Bedford Co. Girl Now Faces Federal Charges

Posted:
Bedford Co., VA - A Navy fighter pilot accused of online sex crimes involving a Bedford County girl now faces federal charges.

The feds say Harris admitted to having internet contact with underage girls but then tried to trick them into thinking he'd been framed. Investigators say they've found evidence of victims in Roanoke County, across the United States, and on a military base in Japan.

When members of the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force showed up at Harris' house in Virginia Beach last fall, they say he told them he was actually contacting one of the girls on his iPhone when they knocked on the door.

In March, Harris was sitting at the Bedford Adult Detention Center when court records say his attorney got a letter signed John Anderson. The writer took the blame for the child pornography activities, saying he was framing Harris to break up Harris' marriage. Agents say Harris instructed an associate to send the letter.

The affidavit also lays out Harris' alleged scheme to make money off of the girls. It says Harris told an online investigator, who he believed to be the 14-year-old girl in Bedford County, to perform sex acts on Skype and to set up a PayPal account for all the money they would make.

Authorities say Harris stated he'd made $35,000 doing the same thing with other girls. Harris will no longer be prosecuted in Bedford County. The charges will be rolled over into the federal case.

Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Wes Nance says he will assist federal prosecutors. Authorities are moving Harris to a jail in the Tidewater area.
