SAN DIEGO, May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- National University, a leader in teacher education, joins the San Diego Padres in honoring San Diego teachers as the presenting partner of the Padres' Teacher Appreciation Night at their May 2nd  game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Since 2002, the Padres have annually honored exceptional local schoolteachers, as selected by San Diego County school districts. This year, in partnership with National University, the Padres will recognize the 43 newly named San Diego County District Teachers of the Year and the five reigning County Teachers of the Year. Of those honorees over 30 percent are National University Alumni.

National University will also be hosting over 600 teachers and educational leaders who are alumni of its School of Education at the game. Prior to the game, National University will be holding an information session in the Padres auditorium so that alumni and prospective students for all programs can meet with faculty and university representatives.

The second-largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California, National has for years been on the forefront of teaching future teachers. For the past 13 years, National University's School of Education, has prepared more credentialed teachers than any other single institution of higher education in California and ranks first in the state for awarding master's degrees in education.  Additionally, National has the largest master's in special education degree program in California and the second largest in the nation.

"In my opinion, educating tomorrow's leaders is one of the highest callings in life," said Dr. Michael R. Cunningham, National University President and Chancellor of the National University System. "I am so proud of our School of Education and the high quality of teachers National University produces. Many of our alumni have gone on to impressive leadership roles as principals, superintendents and teachers of the year."

Over the past 20 years, 19 National University alumni have been named San Diego County Teacher of the Year and 90 alumni in school districts throughout the state have been named district Teacher of the Year. Eight alumni have been named California Teacher of the Year, and alumna Sandra McBrayer was named 1994 National Teacher of the Year, the oldest and most prestigious teaching honor in the nation. Additionally, 25 percent of all principals within the San Diego Unified School District are National University alumni.

"The Padres are proud to be a partner with National University in honoring our local teachers.  National University is an established leader in educating and training some of the region's top leaders. Because National University alumni represent over 30 percent of the 2014 Teacher of the Year honorees, this is a perfect partnership for us," said Padres Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Jarrod Dillon. "We'd like to thank and congratulate all of the teachers being honored this year."
