Experts Talk About Fruits And Veggies That Could Be Making You Sick

Posted:
Danville, VA - The fruits and veggies you buy at the store could be dangerous. They're call the "dirty dozen" The Environmental Working Group came up with a list of which foods are the worst for pesticides.

The EWG says about 65% of produce sampled by the Department of Agriculture had pesticides on them.

These fruits and vegetables are what we've always been told to eat, but a new study says what you can't see may be making you sick.

"Fruits and vegetables are a very important part of their diet but making sure it is a safe form and without chemicals," said Dr. Saria Saccocio, Chief Medical Officer for DRMC.

The Environmental Working Group says beware before you dig in. Their website lists the 'dirty dozen.' Number one on the list is apples, the fruit we thought would be keeping the doctor away.

"You run the risk of exposing yourself to certain hormones, to certain chemicals that can effect your brain power // it can also increase your risk for cancer," said Saccocio.

Saccocio suggests to use this list as a warning and not a source of paranoia.

"I wouldn't avoid those fruits and vegetables because they are important parts of food and nutrition but what we have to be careful of is that they are clean," said Saccocio.

Experts say there are some things you can do to clean off those dirty fruits and vegetables. First you can just wash it off with soap and water or you can use a mixture of water and a little bit of vinegar.

Saccocio says it's especially important to wash these items before giving them to your children. New mother Ginyah Mullins says she will now be extra careful before just handing her son some healthy treats.

"I don't want to do something that I think is being helpful but actually be harmful towards him," said Mullins.

You can also buy a spray to clean off fruits and vegetables. But we're told soap or vinegar is just as effective. But if you want to be completely sure there aren't pesticides, go organic.
