Smith Mountain Lake, VA – Authorities from Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries have released the name of the man killed in a boating accident on Smith Mountain Lake Friday night.

Timothy O’Quinn, 37, of Botetourt Co. was killed in the accident, according to Karl Martin with the VGIF. Quinn’s body was located in 90 feet of water by sonar, Martin said.

Kay Wolford, 61, of Botetourt Co. is still in hospitalized with serious injuries, Martin said.

Woldford’s 14-year-old grandson is credited with saving the lives of Gary Nichols, Jr., 42, and Crystal Nichols of Franklin County.

Martin said the boat occupied by the Nichols collided with the boat operated by Wolford, then overturned, throwing the Nichols couple into the water. The 17 foot bass boat operated by Wolford was destroyed, Martin said.

Everyone had been participating in a fishing tournament, Martin said.

The boaters were not wearing life jackets, Martin said, adding that the poor visibility of night likely played a role as well. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Martin said.
