Forest, VA - For most kids, a birthday consists of a party, cake, and of course, lots of presents.
For 11 year old Kassidy Sheppard, she wanted to use her birthday for something bigger.
She attends Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and loves playing with her dog, Oree.
So it seemed natural to her to help other animals.
Kassidy asked her friends to forgo the usual presents, and instead, make a donation to the Lynchburg Humane Society. Her friends and family stepped up, and donated bags of pet food, cleaning supplies, and dog toys, among other things.
Lynchburg Humane Society Executive Director Makena Yarbrough couldn't have been more impressed with the generosity of the 11 year old, saying "It's wonderful when it does happen, when young people decide not to take for themselves, but to give to others."
Kassidy's generous donation comes at a time when donations are greatly needed, especially with the warm summer months just ahead.
As Yarbrough explained, "We are expecting our population of animals to increase considerably, so we go through a lot more supplies through the summer months."
For instance, The Humane Society goes through more than 50 pounds of dog food a day.
Kassidy hopes more people will help them out, for the same reason she did. "Because the Humane Society always needs stuff to keep it going and help the animals."
