'Fed Up Documentary Highlights Negative Effects of Added Sugars

Posted:
Sugar as addictive as cocaine? That's what the new documentary 'Fed Up' is claiming. The movie critiques the food industry for loading their products with sugar, even in the 'low fat' versions.

'Fed up' is the latest documentary touching on America's obesity epidemic. The greatest villain in this movie is, added sugar.

Narrated by Katie Couric, the movie's creators are 'Fed Up' with food companies adding ample amounts of sugar into their products. Way more than our bodies are designed to process.

“Bad sugars are things like high fructose corn syrup, that are highly processed" said Clinical Nutritionist Rachel Sanders. Not natural sugars like in fruit.

'Fed Up' says more than 95% of Americans will be overweight or obese in two decades. “Problems like obesity, which lead to other chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes" said Sanders.

The film grimly points out that this is the first generation of kids expected to live shorter lives than their parents.

Local health coaches Tiffany Tatom and Mary Cope teach parents how to not fall into the trap of confusing nutrition labels. "When you are offering up a nutri-grain bar or a quaker granola bar you are offering up a candy bar" said Tatom.

They say a good rule of thumb is if you can't read the ingredient listed... you probably shouldn't be eating it. "We like to say eat real food. What's real food? Food with one ingredient" said Tatom.

They also recommend substituting highly processed snacks with sweet alternatives like apples or dates. "You have to take it one step at a time and figure out what's best for you" said Mary Cope.

Mary Cope and Tiffany Tatom will be hosting a workshop this Tuesday on how you can cook a healthy meal for your family in 15 minutes.

'Fed up' hits theaters tomorrow. The movie is not playing in Lynchburg, but it will be showing in Roanoke.
