Haley Toyota Breaks Ground On 71,000 Square Foot Facility

Roanoke, VA - After nearly a decade of looking for a buyer, the City of Roanoke has sold a large parcel of land near downtown that will soon be the new location of Haley Toyota/Scion of Roanoke.

The 17-acre parcel, located at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Interstate 581.

"I have to be honest... we were looking out in the counties at various places along the interstate and just sort of came aware of this about two years ago," said Haley President Doug Pridgen.

In 2003, as the city was preparing the site for a stadium and amphitheater project, hazardous waste - including 55 gallon drums with petroleum products, were found underground. The extent of the contamination forced the city to change their plans; ultimately settling on Elmwood Park for the project.

After an EPA led mitigation process the land was cleared for reclaiming albeit businesses such as daycares, community gardens and residential development was prohibited, which made the Haley Automotive Group a perfect candidate.

"It's on the busiest highway in western Virginia: I-581. It's right close to the Roanoke Civic Center. There are friendly competitors here: Magic City and Berguland so Haley is going to be a great part of the 'motor magnet,'" said Roanoke Mayor David Bowers.

Haley Toyota General Manager, Chuck Baker, agrees the move is a win - win for them and the city.

"We like to think we are great corporate citizens here in the City of Roanoke. We sponsor a lot of events and great non profits and we like being part of the City of Roanoke and this is a big part of that," said Baker.

Haley Automotive Group, which spent a little over a million dollars for the land, expects to have the new facility open by early 2015.
