UPDATE:Gas Line Rupture In Downtown Altavista Contained

UPDATE: Per Altavista Police, the ruptured gas line has now been contained and all traffic in the area has resumed.

Altavista, VA -  A gas line has been ruptured by a construction crew in downtown Altavista.

Buildings and businesses in the area of Amherst Avenue and Main Street have been evacuated.

Columbia gas is on scene, and according to authorities there are no reports of injuries.

Altavista sent out the following announcement:
Attention all Altavista parents: There is a natural gas leak in the town of Altavista. Due to this leak, buses will not be able to travel through town. This will only affect students on Buses 44,55, 119, 148, and 159, and any student drivers that have to travel this way. The students riding these buses, and car drivers will be held at the school until it is safe to travel through town. You may go to the school to pick up your child at this time. We will update you when it is safe to travel through town and when we release the buses with any remaining students that have not been picked up by a parent at school. Other students will be dismissed as normal. Thank you.
