Ladies Take to the Skies in Lynchburg’s 'Women Can Fly' Event

Lynchburg, VA - Close to 100 women and girls took flight Saturday at Freedom Aviation in Lynchburg, all a part of the Women Can Fly event.

Many of the girls that participated say they loved it and say they have more of an interest in flying now.

Liberty University co-sponsored the event. They have close to 800 students in their aviation program. Out of the 250 students in their flight school, only fifty of those are women.

School officials say women make up six percent of the aviation industry, and they want to see that percentage go up.

"We're trying to change that by letting them know and exposing them to the career and the whole entire field and just letting them know that it's something they can totally strive for," said Amanda Spence with the LU School of Aeronautics.

Those attending the event also took tours of the air traffic control tower and could fly some of Liberty's simulators.

All of the activities were free.
