Large Crowd Gathers to Honor Fallen Heroes From Halifax Co.

Halifax Co., VA - Veterans, family members, and friends came together to salute those from Halifax County who fought and died throughout our nation's history.

The annual Memorial Day Tribute was held at the Halifax County War Memorial - which features the names of 750 Halifax County residents killed in service to our country.

"Each of them is somebody's son or daughter. Each of them meant something to somebody, " said keynote speaker, Brig. Gen. Don Broome (Ret).

Volunteers from across the area saluted the fallen heroes with music, flowers, and prayer.

The event was especially significant for Anita Lynn Junell who came to see one of four new names recently added to the memorial.

"I came here about 4 or 5 years ago and noticed his name was not there, so I came home and pursued it, " Junell said in reference to her distant uncle, Sylvester Juniel, who lived in Halifax County and died while serving in the Revolutionary War.

After working with the memorial committee to get his name added this year, Juniel traveled from Texas to see it for herself and pay her respects.

"I'm so grateful, humbled....we're so endebindebtedur veterans, " said Junell.

Event organizer Dr. Gerald Burnett says that is what this day is all about.

Keeping the legacy of those who died for our freedom alive and well in our community.
"We don't ever plan to let their memory die, " said Burnett.

Three other names added to the memorial this year were James Murray, John Overby Junior, and John Guthrie. They all died during the Civil War, and their families were also in attendance.
