LPD to Receive $40,000 Grant

Lynchburg, VA - The Lynchburg Police Department is in line to receive a big grant that will help multiple departments.

City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to allow the department to apply for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, totaling nearly $41,000.

LPD will be using the money to buy forensic computer software and hardware, map boards for supervisor vehicles, an evidence refrigerator, impact munitions, and tasers.

Members of the Criminal Investigations Unit say the grant will help them focus more on computer crimes and mobile devices.

“We're seeing cell phones used in just about every crime known that we investigate. We've looked to try to increase our capabilities to examine the devices that officers are seizing," said Detective Kevin Poindexter, Criminal Investigations Unit.

The city is not required to match funding for the grant.
