Timberlake Twirlers Compete in Subway Commonwealth Games

Campbell Co., VA - Brookville High School's gymnasium was full of young women hoping to twirl their way to a trophy Saturday.

The Timberlake Twirlers and Campbell County Recreation hosted a baton competition as part of the Subway Commonwealth Games of Virginia.

Almost 20 girls from Virginia and North Carolina competed as individuals and as a team.

Baton twirling was recently added to the 50 other sports that make up the Commonwealth Games.

Twirlers say they're glad what they do is now being considered a sport.

"It requires so much hand-eye coordination and you have to be physically active. You have to be in shape. You're throwing a baton 50 feet in the air, spinning, jumping, leaping, there's a lot of gymnastics involved, a lot of dance moves, a lot of technique," explained College Miss Majorette of America Harlie Dale.

Two members of the Timberlake Twirlers will be competing for national titles in July.
