A Lot of Folks Pack the Auditorium for a Bedford County School Board Public Hearing

Bedford County, VA – Monday night folks packed a public hearing at Staunton River High School in Bedford County on a proposal to close at least one elementary school.

The proposal is geared toward Moneta or Body Camp Elementary in an effort to save money after a recommendation from a state-mandated study.

But the battle is really just beginning for these folks.

Moneta and Body Camp aren't the only schools on the chopping block.

Bedford Primary and Thaxton Elementary are on the list too.

And although this closure is only a recommendation the School Board feels it's in the best interest of the county to follow the advice.

Parents, concerned citizens, and students got the chance to plead their case Monday night.

Jamie Johnson whose child is a student at Moneta Elementary says the school board needs to consider multiple things before making the decision, “the bus ride is a consideration, the new students, new faces, and new environments. Kids don't adapt as easily as adults do, kids should be the first concern.

And Sheila Alston who is a grandmother of three Body Camp Elementary students says this decision is moving really fast, “they need to give them a little more time to think about closing these schools, I mean, this isn’t something that needs to be done right now. A year…two years see what happens.”

The school board says they could jeopardize 90 million dollars of school funding over the next 15 years if they don't make a decision to close the schools.

The only alternative would be to raise property taxes.

The School Board will make a decision about Body Camp and Moneta at their meeting on June 5th.
