UPDATE: Tornado Watch Issued, Second Area of Storms Yet to Move Through

Posted:
Lynchburg, VA - An organized area of heavy storms, some of which have become briefly severe, will move into the ABC 13 Viewing Area tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado WATCH until 3 a.m. (not a Warning, which is more serious), for most of the ABC 13 Viewing Area except for Southside.

Counties included in the Tornado Watch are: Alleghany, Amherst, Bath, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Russell, Scott, Smythe, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe.

As a reminder - a Tornado WATCH means conditions are somewhat favorable for the development of tornadoes and rotating storms in and close to the watch area. It is also worth noting that NON rotating storms, which can produce strong, damaging, straight-line winds are also possible in or near the watch. In other words, just because there is a Tornado Watch, there is no guarantee of a tornado at all, just the potential. And any wind damage may come from non-tornadic winds as well.

Other than wind damage in a few of the storms, the stronger storms will have small hail and dangerous lightning should they hold together while moving over the mountains.

As we get further into the night, the storms will lose a lot of their energy as temperatures cool slightly.

Still, vivid lightning can accompany any storm, along with very heavy rainfall rates which could lead to ponding of water on roadways.

--------------

Lynchburg, VA - Heat combined with high humidity and instability is combining to make for an unsettled evening and night ahead for a few areas.

An approaching disturbance will start to act on the moist and unstable air, to keep heavy showers and isolated strong storms going into the night ahead.

Remember, any storm could have damaging winds, hail, very heavy rain, and dangerous lightning. However, a large and widespread event is not expected from tonight’s system.

Either way, ABC 13 Weather will be monitoring the situation on-air and online to keep you up to date.
