Special Olympics Torch Run Passes Through Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA - Wednesday, Lynchburg Police Officers kicked off their leg of the annual torch run for the Virginia Special Olympics.  Deputies from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office dropped off the torch that began its journey in Bristol.

Lynchburg officers ran it eight miles to the 5th Street bridge, where it met deputies from Amherst County.  It will arrive, along with seven other torches in Richmond Friday night, for the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics.

"It's just another way to raise some money for one of the best causes we know, so it's something we can all come together with the community and we're very proud to be a part of it” said Chief Parks Snead of the Lynchburg Police Department.

Since last year’s Special Olympics, Virginia law enforcement has raised $1.1 million to support the organization.
