Danville, VA - The Danville Area Humane Society is looking for who they say killed a miniature schnauzer on May 27 right in the owner’s front yard on Walnut Creek Road.

According to the Humane Society, 3-year-old “Max” was in his owner’s front yard around 7:15 a.m. when his owners heard a loud “yelp” from the yard outside.

Max’s family found him laying down in the front yard with labored breathing.

The family rushed as fast as they could to a veterinary clinic, while the husband performed chest compressions during the emergency trip.

Sadly, the efforts were not enough to save “Max. He had stopped breathing and was pronounced dead.

Those investigating Max’s body found a small wound to Max’s chest between his front legs. An X-Ray showed a bb pellet actually in the dog’s heart.

Cruelty to animals is a Class 1 misdemeanor, and is punishable by confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.

The Humane Society reports that is family is “heartbroken”. Max was the six-year-old son’s best friend, companion, and playmate, according to the family.

“Even if no one is ever found guilty of this horrible crime, at least the public will be made aware that not only are we living in a time when it is dangerous to let our children play in our own yard unattended, but apparently we must also keep watchful eyes on our pets so they are not shot and killed while doing their business in their own yards,” said family member Mrs. Woods.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death of Max. If you have any information at all you are urged to call 434-799-0843.  Callers may remain anonymous and still get the cash reward.
