Team USA Softball Plays Central Virginia All Stars

Posted:
LYNCHBURG - A sizable crowd watched some of the best softball players in the country face off against some of the best from Central Virginia Friday night at City Stadium.

The CVAS team was coached by Liberty's head softball coach and former USA player Dot Richardson.

From LU athletics:

The USA national team has been conducting its selection camp at Liberty Softball Field this week. A total of 24 athletes are vying to earn one of 17 spots on the Women’s National Team. The final roster will be announced on June 22, and those 17 players will compete in the 2014 World Cup of Softball in Irvine, Calif., and the 2014 ISF World Championships in Haarlem, Netherlands.

Included among those trying out for Team USA are six players who competed in the 2014 Women’s College World Series. Infielder Kelsey Stewart, from 2014 national champion Florida, is trying out, along with pitcher Jaclyn Traina and outfielder Haylie McCleney from national runner-up Alabama. The 2014USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year, pitcher Lacey Waldrop from Florida State, has been training with the team as well.

Dot Richardson, Liberty’s first-year head coach, will field a team of 16 collegiate and post-collegiate student-athletes, the Central Virginia All-Stars. This team will be comprised of four of Liberty’s 2014 graduating seniors (Alyssa DiMartino, Marybeth Sciolino, Sammi Shivock and Katie Zavodny) in addition to several standouts from the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.

The Central Virginia All-Stars’ roster includes the 2014 VaSID State Player of the Year (Megan Baltzell, Longwood), along with the State Pitcher of the Year (James Madison’s Jailyn Ford) and State Rookie of the Year (Niki Prince, James Madison). Five out of the 15 players on the roster were named to the 2014 VaSID All-State University Division Softball Team.

Richardson, a softball legend, was a standout for the USA Softball Women’s National Team. She helped Team USA win two Olympic Gold medals, in 1996 and 2000 along with Gold at five Pan American Games and four World Championships. Among her many honors, Richardson is enshrined in the ASA Softball Hall of Fame and the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
