Arlington, VA - Kicking off celebrations for the Army's 239th birthday,  Army leaders presented Purple Hearts to two Soldiers in Arlington. One of those soldiers was Lynchburg's very own Kareem Francis. Secretary of the Army John McHugh awarded Sgt. Francis his Purple Heart. Sgt. Francis, who joined the Army in 2009 was shot in the spine and paralyzed in 2013 in Afghanistan. We spoke with him on the phone Saturday afternoon and he says he is improving. He was in great spirits. Sgt. Francis continues his recovery at Walter Reed Hospital but is in town for another week.
