Boonsboro Country Club Hosting VSGA Juniors Golf

LYNCHBURG –– Defending champion Mark Lawrence Jr., 17, of Richmond and Fitz Woodrow IV, 16, of Charlottesville each shot 2-under-par 69 to lead the first day of stroke-play qualifying at the 24th Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship being conducted at Boonsboro Country Club.

Lawrence and Woodrow were the only competitors to post a subpar round on the opening day. Northern Virginian Ian Hildebrand, 17, of Purcellville signed for even-par 71, while seven other competitors returned scores of 1-over 72.

Lawrence’s day got progressively better compared to how it started. He missed breakfast and was basically playing on an empty stomach for much of the first nine. But he fueled up on the eighth hole and soon thereafter, his round gained momentum, logging three straight birdies at Nos. 9-11, all inside 3 feet. He added another from 20 inches at the last to equal the low round.

“I really struggled early on in the front nine because I was pretty hungry and wasn’t hydrated,” said Lawrence, a rising senior at Mills E. Godwin High School in Richmond. “After No. 8, I started hitting the ball where I needed to.”

Boonsboro requires exacting shot placement and Lawrence was in position for much of the final 10 holes.

“You have to put the ball in the right spots,” Lawrence said of the classic layout. “If you miss in the wrong spot, you have no chance of getting it up and down. You have to be consistent.”

Lawrence knows a whole new event, of sorts, begins with the start of match play on Thursday, which follows Wednesday’s second day of stroke play qualifying.

“The first two days, you focus on playing solid golf—not ‘I’ll be aggressive and shoot 65,’ ” said Lawrence, who owns a win at The Signature Invitational at The Federal Club and a second at the Kenridge Invitational this season. He is fifth among points leaders in the VSGA player rankings entering the championship. “You’re just trying to make match play because it’s a whole different type of golf.”

Woodrow is looking for a spot on the match play bracket for the first time in three starts in the event. He missed out in a playoff last year, but his first round performance all but assures his place in the round of 16. A rising junior at St. Anne’s Belfield School in Charlottesville, Woodrow accounted for three birdies and a bogey. He made two short putts at Nos. 5 and 6, was one under par through nine and dropped in a 20-footer at the par-3 13th hole for his final birdie of the day.

“I hit the ball pretty well and hit a bunch of greens,” Woodrow said. “I had a lot of good looks for birdie, but honestly, it could’ve been lower. It was fun out there.”

Hildebrand, a quarterfinalist at last year’s VSGA Junior Match Play, made a late birdie at No. 17, his third of the round, to offset a bogey and a double bogey.

Following the first day of qualifying, the field was reduced to the low 75 competitors and ties with 77 players at 11-over 83 advancing to Wednesday’s second round.

After the second round of stroke play qualifying, the top 16 players will advance to the opening round of match play on Thursday, June 19. The quarterfinals will also take place on Thursday followed by the semifinals and scheduled 18-hole championship final on Friday, June 20.
