Update: Appalachian Power Gives Estimate on Power Restoration

Update 9:30 pm - Appalachian Power confirms the power outages Friday night are due to lightning from the evening storms.

A spokeswoman said they hope to have half of the 13,000 customers in Virginia who lost power back on line by midnight.

They also said they've had problems getting everyone back online because of the numerous lightning strikes -- that make outside work dangerous for their crews.

In all 13,000 customers across Virginia are in the dark.

Lynchburg, VA - More than 6,000 people are without power in the Lynchburg area Friday night.

Appalachian Power reports 5,600 in the Hill City are in the dark.

137 in Bedford, 2,300 in Roanoke, and 700 in Roanoke County are all without power.

We are also at the scene of a power line fire on Carroll Avenue in Lynchburg.

It started around 5:30.

At last check part of the road is closed as police wait for AEP to come fix the line.
