Shots Fired At Party Possible Motive For Lynchburg Murder

Lynchburg, VA -

With Lynchburg Police arresting suspect number 8, 18 year old Jhalil Darian Bateman, in the murder of Lawrence Giusto, questions about a possible motive remain. Did a shooting at a party in Madison Heights lead to retaliation?

That's the question investigators in Amherst County and Lynchburg are trying to answer.

Lynchburg Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Felmlee said in court the shooting of 20-year old Lawrence Giusto was in "retaliation". While Felmlee declined to specify further, he does believe there is a connection between Giusto's death, and shots fired just hours before at a party in Madison Heights.

The Amherst County Sheriff's office confirms they're investigating a shots fired call on the 400 block of Eastview Drive early Sunday.

ABC13 spoke with several neighbors, who declined to be on camera. One neighbor says her granddaughter attended the party that evening, but left because of rising tensions between other partygoers. In her words, "she had a bad feeling about it".

On Shaffer Street in Lynchburg, friends and family of Giusto have set up a memorial with candles, pictures, and mementos. Family and friends are holding another memorial Wednesday evening, while Giusto's viewing is Friday night .Meanwhile, suspect number 7, Jakiel Brown, appeared, via video conference, in Lynchburg District Court today.

He is being held without bail, and is facing 4 felony charges, including 1st degree murder. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for the four adults on August 21st.
