Teams Upset with Cost to Use Bedford Co. School Fields

Bedford Co., VA - Some travel baseball teams say they'll have to cut games this season, because their cost to use Bedford County school fields has tripled since last summer.

Until now, athletic directors were charging different fees at different schools.

The school system started enforcing the rate stated in the existing facility use agreement.

It's $50 an hour for games and practices. Teams pay another $25 per hour if they turn on the lights.

"The fields can only take so much use. They have to be maintained and taken care of," said Randy Hagler, Chief Financial Officer for Bedford County Schools.  "The school board does not really allocate any money out to the schools to maintain our softball or baseball fields. The schools do that on their own."

The school board recently voted to give teams that are made up of only Bedford County Public Schools students a discount. Those teams will pay a flat rate of $400 a season and $25 an hour for lights.

The board will revisit the issue at Thursday’s meeting.
