Dr. Kouchner to be Honored by Biopharmaceutical Leaders at The Prix Galien USA Award Ceremony on October 28th in New York City

NEW YORK, June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Galien Awards Committee announced today that Doctors Without Borders founder Bernard Kouchner, MD, humanitarian, physician, and former French Foreign Minister, will receive the 2014 Pro Bono Humanum Award at the eighth annual Prix Galien USA Awards ceremony. The Pro Bono Humanum Award recognizes ground-breaking efforts in improving human health.

This prestigious award, first bestowed on Dr. P. Roy Vagelos in 2007, will be presented by Nobel Prize Laureate Professor Elie Wiesel at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City on October 28, 2014.

"Dr. Kouchner is a hands-on visionary who has had a profound impact on the public health and political world," said Dr. P. Roy Vagelos, Chairman of the Committee. "We are proud to name Dr. Kouchner recipient of the 2014 Pro Bono Humanum Award."

The Galien Awards Committee elected Dr. Bernard Kouchner for his longstanding humanitarianism in health and politics as well as his commitment to health reform and his numerous interventions to prevent life-threatening crises. A medical doctor from Paris, Dr. Kouchner has authored nine books, co-founded "Medecins sans Frontieres" (Doctors Without Borders), and "Medecins du Monde" (Doctors of the World). Doctors Without Borders, winner of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, delivers emergency medical aid to those who lack health care and victims of epidemics and natural or man-made disasters.

Dr. Kouchner founded the social charity "REUNIR, Le Dialogue en Action" (Make fun, dialogue in action). He has held numerous political positions, including French Minister of State, Minister of Health, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Mission in Kosovo, Minister Delegate at the Ministry for Employment and Solidarity with responsibility for health in France. He is also a member of the European Parliament and President of the Committee on Development and Cooperation.
