Farmers Upset Over Bedford Market Schedule

Posted:

Bedford, VA - Some farmers are upset over a schedule change at the Bedford Farmers Market.

Starting this season, farmers can only sell at the market on Fridays and for only five hours.

A farmer we talked to said he wasn't aware of the change until he called to buy a seasonal permit.

"I turned around and asked her wasn't this built for a farmers market?,” said Tony Overstreet. β€œShe said yeah and I said well why can't we have a farmers market more than that?"

"We don't currently have the number of vendors or even just farmers locally to be able to sustain every day,” said Amanda Adams, Director of Bedford Main Street Incorporated.

The Town of Bedford owns the farmers market. The director of Bedford Main Street Inc. said farmers cannot be allowed to sell anytime they want because that would cause a liability issue for the town.
