Railroad Safety Meeting at Liberty

Posted:

UPDATE: Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University and Lynchburg Emergency Response crews attended a joint meeting today on railroad safety. Norfolk Southern, whose railroad runs over the Liberty tunnel, hosted the training on Liberty's campus.

According to Norfolk Southern tells me that this training session was scheduled well before the C-S-X train derailment in April. Roughly 30 members of the Liberty University Police Department, risk management and Lynchburg EMS attended the training.

Public RelationsDirectorr Robin Chapman says LU and Lynchburg officials reached out to the railroad company to help emergency response crews prepare for potential hazardous materials incidents.

Such as the one that happened here in Lynchburg when three CSX cars carrying crude oil ended up in the James River.

Chapman says crews broke off into their respective agencies and had to come up with solutions for different emergency scenarios. The training featured a high-level railroad emergency simulation.

As well as instruction on proper procedures, including protocols for specific hazardous chemicals. "It's to test how well they coordinate with each other, among themselves, and between agencies" said Chapman.

They also discussed evacuation possibilities for Liberty University and the surrounding community.

This follows the train derailment in downtown Lynchburg in April when thousands of gallons of crude oil spilled into the James.
Norfolk Southern is leading the meeting and it was coordinated by Liberty's Office of Risk Management.  About 30 employees from LUPD and Lynchburg EMS are there.
