UPDATE: 46 Year Old Woman Dead After Shooting in Appomattox Co., Son Charged

UPDATE:  A search warrant filed by the Appomattox County Sheriff's office has detail in the murder investigation of Laura Phelps Hess. Her son is charged with her murder. 

According to the affidavit, filed in Appomattox County Circuit Court, investigators were "confronted by a white male whom he identified as Josh Phelps." The investigator goes on to note that Phelps, "advised the deputy that the gun was lying in the residence on the floor and that he (Phelps) had shot the gun."  The warrant also details that deputies recovered "two linen covers with red stains," that were found on the victim. 

The warrant states the the deputy went inside the mobile home, allegedly shared by Phelps and his mother and found Hess dead and "lying on the floor with a gun shot wound to the neck." Investigators recovered two guns, a .22 caliber bolt action rifle, a .410 gauge shotgun as well as spent .22 caliber shell casings from inside the home. 

Phelps has hired defense attorney, Tommy Lawson to represent him.  He is charged with felony murder, firing into an occupied dwelling and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony. His next court date is a hearing set for September. 
UPDATE: Authorities have confirmed the identity of the woman killed.  She is Laura Phelps Hess.  Her son is being charged. Neighbor and friend, Rachel Nickerson spoke to ABC 13 through tears on Friday, "Laura was a great mom, a great person. If you needed the shirt off your back. She would give it to you." Nickerson said the family had "been through too much heartbreak in one year," telling ABC 13 that Phelps Hess had lost other family members. 
UPDATE: According to investigators, 18 year old Joshua Phelps is being charged with three felonies including felony murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling as well as using a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held without bond at the Amherst Adult County Detention Center. 

Investigators said the incident appeared to be a domestic dispute but it remains under investigation.
UPDATE: According to investigators, a 46 year old woman was killed in the shooting off Chestnut Mountain Drive Friday morning and an 18 year old, the woman's son, has been charged.

Deputies responded to the scene about 5:00 Friday morning where they found the woman already deceased.

Appomattox Co., VA - The Appomattox County Sheriff's Office is on the scene of a shooting.

The 911 call came in about the incident on Chestnut Mountain Drive about 5 a.m.  Both the Appomattox County and Campbell County Sheriff's Offices responded at first.Law enforcement there did confirm there was a shooting.  No other details have been made available at this time.
