Lynchburg Habitat For Humanity Chapter Changes Approach

Posted:
Lynchburg, VA - The Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity is changing course. The organization says they're scaling down the number of new homes they build.

The economy has made fundraising a challenge, so they have decided to change their approach.

Kimberly Jiggetts says she was ecstatic when she found out she was finally going to be a homeowner. "It means the world to me. I've never owned anything other than a car" said Kimberly Jiggetts

For their 25th anniversary, Habitat has partnered with Genworth Financial and the Rotary club of Lynchburg to build Jiggetts and her sons a two-story home. "They are excited to move and have their own yard, their own porch and their own room."

Habitat for Humanity has already laid down the foundation for Kimberly Jiggetts' Home. It's the first home they've built this fiscal year. However, 2015 they say they won't be building as many homes from the ground up.

"In 2013, we built four new homes. That was tough, we had to dip into some reserve funds" said Executive Director Donna Vincent.

Donna Vincent says with funding decreasing, the board of directors got together to figure out ways to do more with less.

"Right now we are building four homes a year and would like to by the year 2020 be building at least 12 homes per year serving 12 families" said Vincent.

To do that they have decided to combine single family and multifamily new construction, with remodeling and renovations of older Habitat homes.

That way they can hopefully serve two additional families a year until they reach their goal of serving 12 families a year by 2020.

"Our goal is to find new ways to for sponsors to be a part of our organization" said Vincent.

250 volunteers from Genworth financial and another 50 from the Rotary Club of Lynchburg will begin working on the Jiggetts' house this Thursday.

Habitat says it should be ready in time for Thanksgiving.
