Amherst Co., VA- The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their deputies. Deputy James C. McAllister lost his fight against pancreatic cancer.

In a letter from Sheriff Ayers, McAllister is described as an exemplary officer that will be sorely missed. McAllister joined the Sheriff's Office when he was 55 years old. He had been fighting a battle against pancreatic cancer since June of last year.

He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and two stepsons.

Deputy James C. McAllister, fondly known as Mac,  joined the Sheriff's Office in 2008 at 55 years old.  The Sheriff says he would often ask Mac if he had any regrets about joining such a stressful career late in life.  He says Mac's answer was always the same-- "my only regret is I didn't join sooner."

After he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in June of last year-- Mac was given three to six months to live, but Mac made it clear he would beat that-- and he did-- fighting for over a year. In his last days, he would always tell the Sheriff, "I just have to get back to work."

The Sheriff says Amherst Sheriff's Office will only be able to fill his slot,  but never be able to replace him.
